Online Safety

We are aware that during these big life changes, with children spending their time at home, they may be accessing the internet more frequently than before; through internet searches, games and apps. Whilst this can be safe, if age-appropriate and overseen/approved by an adult, we want to ensure everyone remains safe, and so have put together some advice and resources to follow and explore.

8 steps to keep your child safe online this month

1. Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2. Chat little and often about online safety: If you’re introducing them to new learning websites and apps while school is closed, take the opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these services and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they’re online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3. Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4. Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

5. Supervise their online activity: Keep the devices your child uses in communal areas of the house such as in the living room or kitchen where an adult is able to supervise. Children of this age should not access the internet unsupervised in private spaces, such as alone in a bedroom or bathroom.

6. Talk about how their online actions affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

7. Use ‘SafeSearch’: Most web search engines will have a ‘SafeSearch’ function, which will allow you to limit the content your child can access whilst online. Look out for the ‘Settings’ button on your web browser homepage, which is often shaped like a small cog.

8. Parental controls: Use the parental controls available on your home broadband and all internet enabled devices in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Our Environment

Teams

Remember to use your child's Teams account to keep up to date with what we are doing. We often share important messages and you can see photos of your child's learning.

Some helpful reminders...

  • Your child will need to bring a named water bottle with them every day
  • Our PE day is Wednesday. Please make sure your child comes to school in their PE kit on Wednesday's.
  • Please make sure that your child's clothes and PE kits are all labelled.
  • On Friday afternoon we learn outdoors and need to have our wellies in school.
  • Your child's reading book will be changed once a week. They may have a reading book and always a story book. As they progress they will also have a Read! Write! folder which needs to be returned to school each day.
  • Each week, on their reading group day, we will check your child's reading diary to see how many times they have read at home. If they have managed to read three times or more at home they will receive a gold star in their diary. The gold stars count towards the reading pin challenge and can't be back dated, unless a child has been absent.
  • If your child would like a piece of toast as a snack in the morning, please remember to top up your Parent Pay account.

     Many thanks, F2 team

Our Achievements

We are all special and unique and work hard to be the best we can be. We are proud of what we achieve and we hope you are too! On a Friday we choose someone who has been a shining star that week and attend a whole school assembly to celebrate their achievement.

E-Safety

We have some rules to help us to be safe when we are online. We follow our SMART rules and Smartie the Penguin has also helped us to make good choices. Read Smartie's story by clicking on the link below.

Welcome to Class 1A

We are a mixed group of year 1 and year 2 children.

Our teacher is Mr Robinson.

Miss Newton is our other main adult who works with us in 1A but we work with all of the Key Stage 1 staff at different times.

Welcome to Autumn Term 2025!

This term we are learning about where we live.

KS1  are brilliant at enquiring and asking interesting questions and so we have set them lots of challenges this term to get their brains buzzing!  In geography we will learn all the skills we need to be able to find out more about Arnold, Nottingham and the whole of the UK. Later on in the term, we will be busy being scientists so that we can discover what it means to be an animal and begin our year long scientific study of seasonal changes by observing our adopted trees. During the second half term we will travel back in time to uncover the mysteries of the Great Fire of London. Using our art and DT skills, we will draw London's skyline and then design a make a Tudor house. In RE, we will be thinking about how to care for others and exploring how different religions celebrate festivals. In PSHCE we will be thinking about relationships and how we grow and change. We will continue to build on our knowledge of British values and learn about protected characteristics. In English, we will be writing fiction and non-fiction texts, building our understanding of composition, punctuation, spelling and handwriting. Read Write will continue to be our daily phonics and reading session. In Maths we will be using the mastery approach to learn about place value and addition and subtraction. Our online safety lessons through Project Evolve are an important part of our computing curriculum and we will continue to learn how to stay safe.

See below for all of our knowledge organisers and sequence of learning for the whole year.

The children will begin on Bronze, and once they score full marks on all 40 questions involving multiplication and division, they will move onto Silver, and so on.  Please see the attachments below to see the structure of the times tables tests your child will be learning.

Internet Safety

During computing lessons, children learn about how to stay safe whilst using the internet and the SMART rules are displayed in the classroom. We all know that the internet is a fantastic resource but it also poses many dangers which children need to protect themselves against. This website is great for helping all of us educate ourselves about this, take a look at it at home.

Online Safety

Online Safety

We are aware that during these big life changes, with children spending their time at home, they may be accessing the internet more frequently than before; through internet searches, games and apps. Whilst this can be safe, if age-appropriate and overseen/approved by an adult, we want to ensure everyone remains safe, and so we have put together some advice and resources to follow and explore.

Ask if anything worries them while they're online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or add another adult they trust.

3. Help you child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried:

This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4. Be non-judgemental:

Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

5. Supervise their online activity:

Keep the devices your child uses in communal areas of the house such as in the living room or kitchen where an adult is able to supervise. Children of this age should not access the internet unsupervised in private spaces, such as alone in a bedroom or bathroom.

6. Talk about how their online actions affect others:

If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

7. Use 'SafeSearch':

Most web search engines will have a 'SafeSearch' function, which will allow you to limit the content your child can access whilst online. Look out for the 'Settings' button on your web browser homepage, which is often shaped like a small egg.

8. Parental controls:

Use the parental controls available on your home broadband and all internet enabled devices in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your provider's website.

Fun activities and resources

At school we follow the Coram SCARF approach to PSHE and Online Safety. In response to the Covid-19 crisis, and an increased internet usage, Coram have updated their website to include a free hub for parents and children. Please see the link below.

This site includes lots of friendly, helpful advice for parents as well as fun links and resources for children too: including a daily diary from Harold the giraffe who is a regular visitor to our school PSHE lessons.

In addition to the links and activities above, Coram are also releasing fortnightly home-learning packs for the children, focusing on their physical and emotional health and how we can look after this, particularly at this time of uncertainty and anxiety. These packs can be added to the class web page every two weeks as they get updated online. So please check regularly.

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Bullen

Contact: lrandall@arnoldmill.notts.sch.uk

After October half-term holiday, we will be using class dojo as a communication app between school and home. We will be posting weekly updates about the children's learning. Please see the QR code outside of the classroom or check your emails from the office to sign up.

A few reminders...

  • We arrive at school at 8.50am. We finish at 3.30pm.
  • Thursday and Fridays are our PE days. Please send your child with appropriate labelled PE kit.
  • Spellings and spelling homework is given (and tested) every week on Friday morning with House points awarded for full marks or outstanding effort.
  • This will be set through spelling shed, you will find your child's login for this in the back of their diary.
  • Maths homework is to learn all times tables that are not already known. If you know all of them to 12x12
  • Please use Microsoft Teams for the most current updates. Your child will have a login.

Reading Homework

  • We aim for every child to read at least three times a week, and in 2D, for the childrens' sakes, we very much see this as a minimum. Please sign planners, once you have heard your child read. If your child reads 3 times a week they will be rewarded with a stamp in the front of their diary. An adult in school will sign and date this square. We will reward your child with reading pins (bronze, silver and gold) and a small prize, as they accumulate the required amount of squares. If your child is a fluent reader, they can read independently and get an adult to sign their diary to confirm this. We want to be reading champions every week so please help us as much as possible.

During the Summer term, our main topic is called, ‘Earth and Beyond’. In geography, they will develop map skills and look at locating and using more complex map skills. We will also look at Biomes and different areas of the globe. We will go onto look at mountain and volcano formation.

In science, the children will be looking at forces and how they act on an object. We will then go on to look at the solar system and planets around us.

In R.E., the children will look at significant people. We will then link this to our art learning and create pop art about a significant person to us.

In PE, the children will be focusing on developing skills in competitive games. We will focus on cricket, rounders, tennis and athletics.

On behalf of all the adults and pupils, welcome to our class.

After October half-term holiday, we will be using class dojo as a communication app between school and home. We will be posting weekly updates about the children's learning. Please see the QR code outside of the classroom or check your emails from the office to sign up.

Key Reminders

  • We arrive promptly to school at 8.50am. We finish at 3.30pm.
  • Thursdays and Fridays are our PE days. Children need PE kit in school on a Friday. Please send them to school in PE kit on a Thursday.
  • Reading homework is to read their book banded books 3 times per week. An adult must sign their diary so that they earn stamps towards reading pins. Diaries are checked on Fridays.
  • Spellings are given out every two weeks. These are not tested but your child can achieve house points for showing evidence or a signed diary to say they have practices at home.
  • Mathematics homework is to learn all times tables that are not already known. If you know all of them to 12x12, start on the next ones i.e. 13, 14, 15 times table etc. Don't forget the 25 times table - which is a very useful one! Tables are tested every Friday and house points given to children who pass a challenge or improve on their previous scores. Your child can also achieve house points for practicing this on TTRS.

Readiness for school

Please send your child to school with the following each day:

  • Water bottle
  • Banded reading book
  • Homeschool Diary
  • Weather appropriate clothing - E.g. coat

Autumn Term Learning

Our focus for the Autumn term will be based on our history work on ‘World War 2’ (and its significance as a turning point in British history). Linked to this, in R.E, the children will study the Holocaust and Judaism and we will visit the Holocaust Centre in Ollerton. In geography, we will look at the countries involved in WW2 and their locations on a map.

In English, the children will study the text ‘Rose Blanche’. As well as this area of learning, in science, the children will study light and sound and, after half term, electricity linked to the Blitz. Our maths study will focus on place value and the four operations.

In PE, the children will be focusing on developing skills in competitive games. In computing, we will be learning about what the internet actually is and how information can be shared. After half term, we will be doing some video editing.
